Name It and Claim It? Prosperity Preaching in the Black Church (Mitchem)
"Sow a seed of faith and God will bless you with great wealth and good health!"
"Just name it, and claim it!"
These are examples of the words spoken by prosperity preachers to hundreds of thousands of believers who are desperately in need of hope. The author's investigative research has enabled her to track some of the theological and sociological focus of prosperity preaching and its effects on the black community.
The author also explores the shape of black communities and the elements that make prosperity churches attractive to its black members. She describes three general types of prosperity churches and she considers the impact of these churches and their theologies on the black church.
