These are examples of the words spoken by prosperity preachers to hundreds of thousands of believers who are desperately in need of hope. The author's investigative research has enabled her to track some of the theological and sociological focus of prosperity preaching and its effects on the Black community.

The author also explores the shape of Black communities and the elements that make prosperity churches attractive. She describes three general types of prosperity churches, and she considers the impact of these churches and their theologies on the Black church.

About the Author

Stephanie Mitchem teaches at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. She earned her Ph.D. from the Northwestern University-Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary joint program.
