A Time to Speak, organized around the themes of Ecclesiastes 3, dismantles some of the arguments rooted in a less-than-thorough analysis of the Bible that have been used to prevent many Black churches from getting involved with people who are either infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS.

McMickle asserts it is time for Black pastors and their congregants to recognize that HIV/AIDS has become a leading cause of death among Black women ages 25 - 34. Additionally, it is spreading among Black teens who engage in risky behaviors at earlier and earlier ages. Further, senior citizens are contracting the disease at an alarming rate when they become sexually active with new partners following the death of a long-term spouse or after a divorce.

About the Author

Marvin McMickle is President of Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School, where he also serves as Professor of Church Leadership and Director of the Program of Black Church Studies. He was senior pastor of Antioch Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio from 1987-2011. He earned his M.Div. from Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York, D.Min. from Princeton Theological Seminary, and Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He is Professor Emeritus of Homiletics at Ashland University and the author of six books.
