Studying the UCC Ethos

The Evolution of a UCC Style focuses on the development of themes that define the United Church of Christ (UCC), as well as the tensions and boundaries contained within each theme.

Randi Walker examines the ethos and culture of the UCC rather than simply describing its structures, and addresses the themes of:

  • inclusiveness
  • diversity of theological heritage (Reformation, Enlightenment, and Pietism)
  • congregational polity (the one and the many)
  • liberal theological approach
  • ecumenical spirit

Randi J. Walker is associate professor of church history at Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California, and an ordained minister in the UCC. She is the author of Emma Newman: A Frontier Woman Minister and Protestantism in the Sangre de Cristos: 1850-1920.
